Excavation of a kiln in Trakai at Karaimų St. 63
Summary / Abstract:

LT2006 m. TIM atliko archeologinius tyrimus Trakų senamiestyje (U–18), Karaimų g. 63. Tyrimais siekta nustatyti šioje vietoje esančio kultūrinio sluoksnio intensyvumą [p. 425].

ENIn conducting excavations in 2006 in the N part of Trakai (at Karaimų St. 63), which is called Užtiltė (beyond the bridge), the TIM discovered a 15th – late 16th kiln for firing structural ceramics. During the excavation, it was established that it had been built in at least 2 stages. Only several wall fragments, which date to the 15th century, belong to the earliest construction. In the 16th century the kiln was rebuilt. Judging by the fragments of the surviving walls, the kiln’s external dimensions should have been around 6.2 x 7.3–7.4 m. The surviving firebox wall is almost 2 m tall. The NW wall with two firing chambers is in the worst shape. Its anterior part and the area in front of the firebox were destroyed in the 20th century through the digging of a storage pit that was almost 3 m in diameter. In the late 16th – early 17th century, the local inhabitants began to dump household rubbish in the kiln. A layer of mixed black earth, which was up to 1.2 m thick and contained over 3000 finds, was recorded inside it during the excavation. The majority consisted of household pottery and stove tile sherds.
