ENIn 2006 trench 172, which had an area of 50 m2, was excavated at Lieporiai unfortified settlement I (Šiauliai). An area of 22 m2 was excavated down to sterile soil while the other area of the trench (28 m2) was partially excavated and preserved since a deep pond was found there. The cultural layer consisted of two different horizons. The upper 10–50 cm thick horizon was the settlement’s general cultural layer with finds characteristic to a living environment: stones, small pieces of charcoal, animal bones and teeth, large and small pieces of charred clay plaster, small sherds of smooth hand built pots, pieces of slag, and stone and iron artefacts. The stone artefacts include 9 quern stones, 2 whetstones, 8 polishing stones, 8 grinding stones, 1 mortar, 1 bore peg, and 3 artefacts of uncertain purpose. The iron artefacts include a crook-shaped pin and a worn out awl. The cultural layer’s lower horizon consisted of pond silt, in which were found, aside from the aforementioned artefacts, boards, sticks, wood slivers, and pieces of wood. The settlement dates to the 4th–8th centuries.
