Alternative Title:
Archaeological survey of the new section of A5 in Kalvarija District
Summary / Abstract:

LT2022 m. birželį magistralinio kelio A5 Kaunas-Marijampolė-Suvalkai ruože nuo 85,00 iki 97,06 km teritorijose (Kalvarijos sav.) vykdyti žvalgomieji tyrimai. Jų metu ištirtas bendras 122 m2 plotas. 2021 m. rekonstruojamo kelio ruožo teritorijoje (apie 205,05 ha plote) J. Račas atliko žvalgymus. Žvalgant paviršių archeologinių radinių aptikta Smalninkuose (3 titnago nuoskalos), Trakėnuose (šoninis gremžtukas), kartu fiksuoti ir menkaverčiai XIX-XX a. radiniai, objektai (ATL 2021 metais, 2022, p. 604). Atitinkamai archeologas išskyrė 6 vietas, kuriose tikslinga atlikti platesnės apimties tyrimus. Kaip tik šiose vietose 2022 m. ir buvo vykdyti žvalgomieji tyrimai [p. 65-66].

ENIn 2022, an archaeological survey was carried out along the Kaunas-Marijampolė-Suvalkai section of the A5 highway from the 85.00 to 97.06 km markers (south-western Lithuania, Kalvarija District). A total of 6 locations were investigated measuring 122 m2 in total. Evidence of prehistoric settlements was identified in Smalninkai and Pelucmurgiai, and initial observations of the associated material assemblage date them to the 2nd-1st millennium BC. The stratigraphy of these settlements in Smalninkai and Naujienėlė is either disturbed or remains undetected (the finds were discovered close of the surface, i. e., within the ploughed layer and topsoil). In Pelucmurgiai, a settlement layer comprised of a mixed light grey soil and yellow sand measuring 5-25 cm in thickness was identified under the topsoil at a depth of 30-50 cm. In Sabaliavas, an outline of stone foundations approximately 20 m long and 8-9 m wide was identified in a spruce grove adjacent to the roadworks. This is likely the foundations of one of the buildings of the former Gromadziszki folwark or manor.
