ENThe excavations, begun in 2001 at the site of the settlement at the foot of the Jaučakiai hill fort site (Kaunas District), were continued in 2008 with the excavation of 161.5 m2 in plot 42. Fragments of the settlement’s cultural layer survived only in pits dug into the sterile soil and filled with humus mixed with sand that frequently contained small particles of charred wood particles. The pits contained sherds of pottery with rough surfaces and livestock bones. In digging a pit in plot 32, a likely secondary burial with parts of the skeletons of three individuals: an adult, an adolescent, and a child with two stones similar to a saddle quern placed on top, were found by chance. Sherds of ceramic pots with rough surfaces were also found in the pit with the burials, but it is not clear whether they found their way into the pit at the same time as the remains.
