Tyrimai J. Basanavičiaus gatvėje 4a-b

LT2009 m. buvo atlikti archeologiniai tyrimai Biržų senamiestyje (A518P), sklypuose J. Basanavičiaus gatvėje 4a–b, kuriuose buvo numatyta statyti Biržų teritorinės darbo biržos administracinį pastatą su informaciniu profesinio konsultavimo centru. Tyrimai vykdyti 1400 m2 plote. Būsimo pastato vietoje buvo iškasti 7 plotai, iš viso 555 m2. Žvalgomieji tyrimai vykdyti komunikacijų vietose, iškasant 38 šurfus ir ištiriant bendrą 71 m2 plotą. Taip pat vykdyti archeologiniai žvalgymai dalyje šiluminės ir elektros trasų. Tyrimų metu buvo surinkta gausi medžiaga, susijusi su Biržų miesto kultūra, istorija ir urbanistiniu vystymusi. Nagrinėjama teritorija buvo viena iš seniausiai ir intensyviausiai gyvenamų Biržų vietų [p. 319].

ENIn 2009, an excavation (a total of 1 400 m2) was conducted on the plots at J. Basanavičiaus Street 4a–b in Biržai Old Town, where the construction of the administrative offices of the Biržai Labour Exchange and an Employment Information Centre is planned. A valuable cultural layer dating to the second half of the 16th – first half of the 20th century and containing finds reflecting contemporary urban culture was found in this area. During the excavation, six building periods were revealed. The first probably began with the Wallach Reform and ended in 1579 when the town was burned during a Swedish invasion. The second stage began with the town as depicted in T. Makowski’s engraving at the turn of the 17th century and ended with the great fire of 1666. The second stage culture layers contained many tile sherds. The third stage covers the period from the great fire of 1666 to the Northern War and the town fire of 1704. The fourth stage comes from the 18th century, the fifth from the 19th – early 20th centuries, and the sixth from the second half of the 20th century when the low rise buildings in the area were destroyed by the construction of the Biržai Culture Centre in 1989–1990.
