Summary / Abstract:

ENThis text deals with two approaches to Plato's writings. On the one hand, the author emphasizes the traditional "platonistic" attitude, which considers Plato to be a rational thinker who presented his thoughts as the positive content of a determinate and logical theory. He strives to elucidate certain features of the traditionally accepted theory of ideas, i.e., the topology of ideal reality. According to it, to be an idea and to belong to ideal reality mean to belong to a certain place (or to be located). Thus, ideal reality itself was understood as a place (hyper-ouranios topos). During history this topological conception served as a pattern for defining ideality. On the other hand, the author focuses on the dialogues and texts ("Phaedrus" and "The Seventh Letter") which contain critical remarks about the scriptuality of philosophy. The conclusion that is drawn changes the teleology of philosophical text and speech. "The Seventh Letter" perspective lets us understand philosophy as a continuous and even existential activity, dialectical exercises which do not present any theory but help move towards the "greatest things" (ta megista).
