ENIn 2013, an evaluation was conducted in the segment of the Neris valley from the villages of Molynė–Paneriai to the village of Rusių Ragas (Vilnius district, Širvintos district, and Elektrėnai municipality). Investigations occurred in 15 different places, where a total of 215 test pits and 1 trench (a total of 228 m2) were excavated and other (fieldwalking, metal detector surveys, shovel testing) work performed. The main goal of the investigations was collecting data for an analysis of the region’s settlement system. Test pitting was selected as the main evaluation method. Other methods, i.e. fieldwalking and shovel testing were not used systematically. The test pits were excavated in rows, usually every 50 m. Generally one row of test pits was made, several rows sometimes occurring on wider terraces. Mostly the first and second Neris terraces were evaluated, somewhat less the third and higher terraces. Evaluations were conducted in 15 separate regions named after the villages, which occurred in their territory. The boundaries of these regions were defined by their terrain, i.e. the boundaries of the separate terraces. On some terraces, only part of the area was evaluated, the investigation of the rest to be done in the future.Of the 215 excavated test pits, no archaeological signs (excluding modern age village site finds and layers) were recorded in 126 (58%), doubtful signs in 37 (17%), and clearer signs in 52 (24%). Of the 15 evaluated regions, new, as yet unknown archaeological localities were recorded in ten. Because the evaluations were conducted in places where no archaeological site was known, this can be judged as a very large percentage that shows the especially dense incidence of archaeological objects on the terraces of the Neris valley. The 2013 investigation identified a total of 12 new archaeological localities with cultural layers and finds from various periods: mesolithic, early bronze age, 1st millennium, and early 2nd millennium. The finds were probably connected with the habitation and economic activities of communities.
