Summary / Abstract:

ENThe essay discusses the synagogues of Jewish Lite – a cultural-historical region, which is roughly equivalent to the post-1569 Grand Duchy of Lithuania and approximately coincides with the contemporary Republics of Belarus and Lithuania. The main topics of the discussion are visual and material sources of information about Lite’s synagogues, differences between the synagogues in Lite and in other regions of eastern Europe, the issue of synagogue’s orientation, as well as the fate of the synagogues of Lite in the second half of twentieth century.
