Summary / Abstract:

Tyrimo tikslas – identifikuoti sunykusius Zanavykijos oikonimus. [Iš teksto, p. 95]

ENThe systematic collection of place names was a concern during the period of the independent Lithuania. In 1934, on the initiative of the State Archaeological Commission of the Ministry of Education, Kazimieras Alminauskis’ Instruction for the Compilation of Place Name Lists was published. Teachers and foresters were entrusted with the task of writing down place names. The linguists of independent Lithuania Juozas Balčikonis, Antanas Salys, Pranas Skardžius and literary historian Mykolas Biržiška drew attention to the church registers. The church registers, which are very specific and rich in place names, are the main sources of Lithuanian toponymy. They reflect the totality of the names of a given area and their gradual change. The names recorded in the church registers should have been the priority of the Antanas Smetona Institute of Lithuanian Studies, which started its activities in 1939. The church registers, as well as other historical sources of various periods, which recorded historical oeconyms, are still little studied in Lithuanian onomastics. The oeconyms of Zanavykai land have not yet received attention of researchers. The data on the Zanavykai oeconyms recorded in the church registers provide the possibility to know the names of places which changed, decayed in a specific historical period or were attempted to be established. For example, the following names existed for a relatively short inter-war period: Krušioniai, Mėlyniai and they are not recorded in any other sources. Place Šikutiškė, which no longer exists, had an unofficial name Šnekutiškė, which is recorded only in the church registers. [From the publication]
