Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania announced the year 2022 as the centenary of Lithuanian basketball. The article tells about the patriarch of Lithuanian basketball Konstantinas Savickas who was from Punskas. The first official basketball competition in Lithuania took place in 1922. Lithuania participated in the first international basketball competition on December 13 in Riga. Lithuanian basketball players lost to Latvians at 20:41. A year later, Lithuanian basketball players in Riga lost even more to the Latvian national team (12:47). Eventually, the popularity of basketball in Lithuania faded. There were no basketball matches in 1929. In 1929–1932 the Lithuanian championship did not take place either. Lithuanian basketball was resurrected by American Lithuanians, including the aforementioned Konstantinas Savickas from Punskas. In 1937 and 1939 Lithuania became the winner of the European Championship.
