Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article presents a study of one of the North Samogitian lexical sugroup, the female genitalia names (hereafter FGN), to determine what conceptual features help to highlight semasiological and onomasiological studies of these body parts. 1. According to the semasiological aspect the names of female genitalia used by North Samogitians comprise a considerable subgroup of the thematic group of somatonyms, as on the basis of written resources and live spoken samples approximately 40 invariant lexemes of the mentioned semantics have been identified, e.g.: ciõc", ciùr", ciuryn" / ciur&n", ciur&k", dziuñdz", kaciùkas, knìp" 2, kánka, kušelis, kušys, kuš&nis , kùt", m&ž", mižélka, myžyn", p&nda, pizdà / pyzdà, pìz", pupa), pùt", putel", putýt", raibùt", raudóndvaris, sutv"r&mas, šepšelis, šepšis, šeškas, šeškiùkas, šiu)r", šiurel", škiùr", sprõkl" 2, spùnka, št&š, vištà, vištel". The dialect system does not have a neutral lexeme to name the words discussed. Lexical features of female genitalia attest to their detailed allocation in ethnoanatomy: lexemes provide information on pubic (a sign of hairiness), vaginal (hole), large and small lips (outer and inner labia), clitoris (signs of protrusion), physiological menstrual feature, reproductive and sexual functions. It can be argued that genitalia and urinary organs form one concept, i.e. they are not distinguished in ethnoanatomy of Northern Samogitians (cf. m&ž", mižélka, myžyn", ciuryn" / ciur&n").Systematic semantic analysis allowed to determine the prototypical visual association of female genitalia – that of chicken. It is evidenced by as many as 11 lexemes used in the Northern Samogitian subdialect. 2. According to the nomination the nominathemes of the motivated type of naming involve the bulk of the researched FGN, i.e. approximately about 90 per cent. The most productive within the researched somatonymic nomination system two motivated nomination kinds have been identified, such as: affixational and semantic. As to the quantitative approach, both kinds comprise equal parts of the motivated nominathemes respectively. Among the affixed FGN the suffixed ones are dominant highlighting the conceptual features of minority / melioration, instrument, structure in FGN. A small part comprise paradigmatic forms, whose lexical nominators, verbs, actualize physiological processes and structure. The FGN of the semantic nomination comprise approximately 50 per cent of all the traced invariant nominathemes of the motivated nomination. Both metaphor and metonymy are significant as the accepted means of semantic nomination. A few North Samogitian FGN of the unmotivated kind were found, cf. two indigenous lexemes (pizdà / pyzdà / p&z" ), and one polish loanword (p&nda).3. The motivation system of FGN extend to three types of motivational models (MMT) – comparative, descriptive, and functional. The comparative MMT, the most numerous type, is based on similarity criterion, accordingly, it is a metaphorical model. The names of the types of descriptive and functional MM the lexical motivators of which explicitly define external / internal qualities or functions of a particular FGN are less numerous. The onomasiological meaning of the somatonyms usually incorporate such names as: a) hen names, b) other names of furry little animals, c) small household items usually having a hole, d) urination, water flow names. The complex onomasiological and semasiological analysis highlighted the conceptual features of the female genitalia of the Northern Samogitians, such as: visual/external (hairiness; presence of a hole; presence of small gap, protrusion), functional (productive, sexual, urinational), physiological (menstruation), social (age, kinship), and axiological.
