Apie Antaną Smilgą

LTPrisimindami tautos šviesuolius, gelbėjusius mus nuo asimiliacijos grėsmės, o kalbą – nuo išnykimo pavojaus, stebėdamiesi saujelės to meto inteligentų pasišventimu lietuvybės vardan, vis dar atrandame istorijos paraštėse užsimetusių veikėjų, kurių gyvenimas ir darbai verti nuodugnesnių tyrimų. Vienas tokių yra XIX ir XX amžių sandūroje Sankt Peterburge gyvenęs ir dirbęs aktyvus visuomenininkas Antanas SMILGA (1865–1920), apie kurį rašo jo anūkas profesorius dr. Jurgis DVARIONAS.

ENWe have always fondly remembered our nation’s luminaries, who saved us from the danger of assimilation and rescued our language from extinction. As we marvel at the handful of scholars who devoted their lives to preserving Lithuanian culture, we still find characters who were once lost in the margins and who fully deserve more in-depth research. One of these is Antanas SMILGA (1865–1920), an active member of the Lithuanian community in turn-of-the-century St Petersburg. His life is described here by his grandson Professor Jurgis DVARIONAS.
