ENThe focal issue of the paper is the analysis of high education development on the basis of the Eurostat data, which shows an increase in the number of students in all countries of the EU. However, the 40 % level of the share of the population aged 30-34 years who had successfully completed university (tertiary level) has not been accomplished in all the countries. A comparative analysis of the research studies conducted in Poland and the United Kingdom shows similar problems of employers which regard the lack of appropriate skills and qualifications of prospective workers. The author proposes the improvement of education curricula towards the development of science and social competences. Key words: higher education, knowledge worker, qualifications and competences.
