ENBernardas Brazdžionis (1907–2002) was the writer, literary critic, editor, journalist, educator, translator, the first director of Maironis Museum, who planned that his archive would appear in this museum in the future. Today it is the largest collection of the museum, the material of which fully discloses not only Bernardas Brazdžionis, but also the particularities of emigration from Lithuania, Displaced Persons (DP) and American Lithuanians’ cultural and literary life. There are many interesting, unseen archives in Bernardas Brazdžionis’ collection due to the fact that the poet himself worked in Maironis House between 1940 and 1944; he was the first director of the house and, having experience in museum work, he perfectly understood the value of the manuscripts, letters, books, and what is an exhibit. He preserved not only creative manuscripts, letters, but also documents of departure from Lithuania, various documents of emigration to the USA, questionnaires, cards, receipts, and valuable works of art. For museologists and literary researchers, the epistolary legacy of Bernardas Brazdžionis has been always interesting. The epistolary legacy explores a wide range of topics: activities of the Lithuanian Writers’ Society, creative matters, problems of preserving Lithuanian culture and language in exile, sometimes personal relationships or troubles. It is easy to see that the writers trusted the editor Bernardas Brazdžionis of the magazine “Lithuanian Days”, they not only sent their works for publication in a magazine, but also often asked for advice on whether or not to publish a book. Brazdžionis sometimes had to be a museologist: to keep the manuscripts and documents for many years, to ensure that they would appear into the right hands or institutions. In this way F. Kirša’s manuscript books, I. Šeinius’ photo collection, and J. Tininis’ archive found their way to the museum.Valuable certificates, photographs, notes of the Lithuanian language lessons, tests of students of Ravensburg Gymnasium and Boston Saturday Lithuanian School, while Brazdžionis was working in Ravensburg Lithuanian Gymnasium of the period of DP, have survived. Brazdžionis’ creativity in teaching the Lithuanian language is illustrated by the manuscripts of educational poems on the use of declension or correct use of numerals. Sometimes a single unexpected memorial item or photograph may be the basis for an exposition, exhibition, or educational idea. So happened after finding a large comb for goat care in Brazdžionis’ archive and a photograph of Bernardas Brazdžionis in a moment of beekeeping. Bernardas Brazdžionis’ relatives approve the principles of systematization, publishing and exhibiting the archive, and his son Algis Brazdžionis was one of the sponsors of the publication “Bernardas Brazdžionis. Archives”.
