Summary / Abstract:

ENThe commemoration of the 100th anniversary of restoration of Lithuanian state is a perfect opportunity for the museums to look once again at the stored collections of exhibits. Lithuanian Sea Museum stores a lot of exhibits or collections of exhibits related to the establishment of independent Lithuania in 1918 and its restoration in 1990. The present article aims to introduce the symbols of statehood – four authentic Lithuanian flags, which tell separate histories of Lithuania. The first flag represents the efforts of interwar period Lithuania to integrate Klaipėda region and overtake Klaipėda seaport as the object of economic/commercial significance. In 1929–1932, the construction of New Basin (also called Winter Port), which had to adapt sea port to the service of import goods necessary for Lithuania and export goods which were in demand abroad, took place. Lithuanian Sea Museum stores the flag which on 17 December 1932 was raised during the ceremony of sea port basin opening. The second flag was raised onboard of the sailing yacht “Šaulys”. The flag tells us about the Lithuanian sailors in the interwar Klaipėda and in general about the sailing in Lithuania. The base of the flag consists of three colours (yellow, green, red), on the upper left corner there are Columns of Gediminas on the background of two crossed anchors – this is the flag of Lithuanian sailors’ union founded in 1935.The third flag testifies the short and dynamic history of Lithuanian navy. The flag consists of three national colours (yellow, green, red), in the middle – in yellow and green space – on a red shield there is a gold colour cross of Vytis. On 26 October 1935, the pilot sailing to the sea became historical, as for the first time on the only mast of Lithuanian navy ship “President Smetona” the Lithuanian navy flag was raised and the ship for the first time sailed to the sea with navy crew. The last captain of navy ship P. Labanauskas took the flag to the USA, and presently till April 2019 the flag will be stored in Lithuanian Sea Museum. The fourth flag, contrary to the third one, marking the loss of independence, commemorates the regain of independence of Lithuania. Since the summer of 1988, in the context of movement (sąjūdis) in Lithuania, the separate actions supporting the strive for nationality and independence of Lithuania took place. One of them took place on 19 February 1989 in Klaipėda, when after the tanker “British Beach” arrived at the seaport, the crew raised the Lithuanian flag, which they made themselves. In 1992, this flag together with the letter was given to the envoy of already independent Lithuanian in Great Britain J. Karvelis by the ship captain I. M. Petersonas. J. Karvelis gave the flag to Lithuanian Sea Museum.
