Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the museum professional, ethnographer, architectural historian, educator, publicist, and lecturer Klemensas Čerbulėnas. M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art (in 1936 named Vytautas Magnus Museum of Culture) was the first workplace for Klemensas Čerbulėnas. The director of the Museum – well known Lithuanian folk and modern art researcher and critic, museum professional, educator and publicist Paulius Galaunė, who taught Lithuanian folk art and its history at Vytautas Magnus University, noticed the gifted student Klemensas Čerbulėnas and invited him to work at the Ethnography Department of the Museum. Together with Antanas Rūkštelė, the Head of the Department, they have formed the Ethnography Department. They took part in ethnographic expeditions, collected and registered exhibits, fixed ethnographic objects, organised ethnographic exhibitions. K. Čerbulėnas solved the problems of cultural monuments preservation, published articles concerning them and Lithuanian folk art. He also tried to implement the idea of Lithuanian skansen – open-air museum. During 15 years of his work in the Museum, K. Čerbulėnas has changed his position several times: first of all he worked as museum specialist, later – as the Head of Ethnography Department, chief curator, senior fellow, and Director of M. K. Čiurlionis State Museum of Art. Significant and important work for Lithuanian museology, ethnography, folk art and culture has been done by this person.
