ENThe book "History, Language, Geography: Toponyms of Medieval Podillya" describes all known to date mentions of Podolian toponyms starting from the middle of the 14th century through the beginning of the 16th century. It consists of two parts and annexes. The first part is the study that reconstructs the formation of the territory of Podillya, a new region in Ukrainian lands that stretched from Terebovlia in the west to Cherkasy in the east, in the 2nd half of the 14th century. It includes all regional centers of historical Podillya at the time that served as founding clusters for this vast territory between the Dniester river in the southeast and the Dnieper river in the east, the upper Southern Buh and Ros in the north, all the way down to the boundaries of a forest-steppe and steppe geographical zones. A special attention is paid to the territories governed by ‘Tartar tsars’ in the middle and the second half of the 14th century, as well as to a triple partition of the region at that time. The book puts forward a hypothesis that this triple partition shaped the perception of this region in the first quarter of the 15th century. The book analyzes all Podolian toponyms disaggregated by their kinds (choronyms, hydronyms, roads) and functions (town, castle, village, barren, monastery, forest, field etc). The closing of the first part includes the description of sources, which constitute the basis of the study, principles of transliteration, and structure of the dictionary. The second part of the book is the dictionary of toponyms itself. It includes proper names from both published and non-published sources. For the ease of use, the annexes list all the identified toponyms based on the following principle: the first annex includes historical names followed by their contemporary equivalents; the second one lists contemporary names followed by their historical equivalents. The descriptions of the identified toponyms refer to the two kinds of modern day administrative and territorial structure of Ukraine: the first one that had been in place till July 2020 and the second one that reflects the changes brought by the latest administrative territorial reform with revised boundaries of raions and territorial communities. References, works cited, personal and geographical indexes close the book.
