ENDuring the Great Sejm, problematic aspects of education were discussed in regard to military and tax issues, and most frequently in the context of the Commission of National Education. However, the Sejm also addresses the problem of popular, Jewish, Orthodox and Protestant education. The discussion of education represents interesting material, il-lustrating the conflict between conservative and reformist viewpoints on political and social issues. This economically motivated conflict was primarily about the model of education. Conservatives wanted to provide education back to religious orders (primarily Jesuits), reformists defended the Commission of National Education and secondary schooling focused on patriotic and civic education. The Constitution of 3 May 1791 upheld the Commission of National Education, and even strengthened it by counting it among “the great commissions,” thereby opting for keeping education under the state’s care. Keywords: the Commission of National Education, the Great Sejm, education, school.
