ENThe anthology under review is the result of a seminar on armed resistance held in Vienna in 2017. It is noteworthy for two reasons. Firstly, the book has an unusually broad geographical scope, covering Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, Ukraine, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Albania – in short, most of the countries in the triangle formed by the Baltic, Black, and Adriatic Seas. Secondly, there has been an attempt to impose a common theoretical framework as a heuristic lens through which the different cases in the book may be viewed. This kind of exercise, which is not usually tried on such a scale, offers the possibility for comparisons that could potentially yield new insights and stimulate new research. Furthermore, the collection brings together well-known names with up-and-coming experts in the field. Taking all this into account, Violent Resistance has the makings of a watershed publication.
