Summary / Abstract:

ENA series of articles has been published recently by the author on the notion of cosmogony as coagulation, solidifying, hardening (implied by the Lithuanian term for cosmogony - sutvėrimas). On the other hand, the concept of freedom is invariably connected with dissolving, melting, thawing, and free flow, as has already been pointed out by the author in the previous article (“Aspects of Freedom”, Būdas, 2022, No. 2). This time, attention is drawn to the fact that free flow is quite a poor unsteady ground, it (as also freedom) doesnt provide support. However, this state works as a compulsory agent for inner development and spiritual growth. One of the most expressive images of such a state is that of walking on the water, as that of Christ. The very image could be traced to presumably even to the Ancient Indian Rigveda (cf. 1.116.5 and V.47.7).Baltic tradition also knows this image in a special kind of saga which excludes Christian borrowing: a pagan hermit persuaded to visit the local church goes to it straight on the surface of lake but begins to sink upon returning after Mass. The other traditional context of the image is exactly cosmogony: in traditional cosmogonical legends, God (sometimes two of them with the Devil) usually walks on the surface of primordial waters right before the creation of the earth. It is noteworthy that the reason for the creation overtly is the wish to lean onto something and rest (sometimes even sleep), i.e., to have some solid ground under the feet, some support for repose and slumber. Naturally, the hopes are opposite to cosmogony these of eschatology and soteriology would resort to waking and refuse this external support, unreliable and illusionary in the end.
