ENThe subject-matter of the reviewed monograph deserves attention, the authors presented the struggles of Polish intelligence and counterintelligence services with Soviet and Lithuanian intelligence on the basis of espionage cases which were brought before Vilnius courts in the period of the Second Polish Republic. The introduction gives some insight into the subject of the monograph, it presents research assumptions and methodology. Chapter I describes the eastern borders of the Second Polish Republic, and Chapter II describes the framework of border protection services on the line with Lithuania and the USSR. In Chapter III, the authors present the specifics of the operation of Soviet and Lithuanian intelligence in the Polish section. In Chapter IV, they are analyzing the crime of espionage in the criminal law of the Second Polish Republic. Further, Chapter V describes the Vilnius Regional Court and the area of its local jurisdiction. Chapter VI presents criminal proceedings in espionage cases conducted before the Vilnius courts. In the next Chapter, the authors discussed the interests of Soviet and Lithuanian intelligence which were revealed in the course of the cases, the methods of recruiting and the spies’ contacts with the headquarters. Chapter VIII illustrates the question of the borderland and the work of an agent in the prose of Sergiusz Piasecki in the light of the court files. The work is finalized by the attempt of its summarizing. Worth noticing are also the bibliography and the archival resources examined in a pioneering way.
