Title:
Surnames of Lithuanian origin in the Polish anthroponomical system
Summary / Abstract:

ENPoland and Lithuania are close to each other - not only in the territorial sense. Our shared part of history and the eternal, though not ahvays easy, neighbourhood also find their reflection in the anthroponomical system. Among Polish surnames there are names of "Lithuanian" origin (I am using this expression conventionally, because I am well aware that these are forms of genetically Baltic origin). This paper is only an attempt to delineate the particular aspects of this problem, which definitely deserves a more detailed study. Unfortunately, so far this subject has not been covered by any monographic elaboration, though it has been a subject of study by Polish linguists. The present statė of research has benefited greatly from the works of B. Tichoniuk (1988), L. Bednarczuk (1999, 2000) and M. Kondratiuk (1990, 2000). The problem has also been partly covered as part of more general studies. Here one should mention, among others, the works of Z. Abramowicz (1997-1998), L. Citko (2001), L. Dacevvicz (2001) as well as the elaboration by W. Smoczyriski entitled "Lithuanian" Personai names. An attempt to explain, vvhich constitutes an element of part 7 of the "Dictionary of Etymology and Motivation of the Old Polish personai names", i.e. "The Supplement. Solving the many mysteries of Old Polish anthroponomy" (p. 19-30). What is featured and analysed in this work are personai names which are strictly Lithuanian as well as genetically Byelorussian, lithuanised Byelorussian names, polonised names of German origin, Polish derivatives and lithuanised German forms of Christian names. Hence the ąuotation marks around "Lithuanian".
