Summary / Abstract:

ENA comprehensive monograph of life and work of Michał Rouba, a painter who operated in Vilnius during the interwar period. The artist was one of the co-founders of the Vilnius Society of Visual Artists (WTAP) in Vilnius, which had a huge impact on artistic education and the creative path of artists from Lithuania. Besides painting, Michał Rouba practiced artistic and applied graphics. Pedagogical work in the field of plastic education of young people was a very important goal for him. He was the manager and lecturer of the School of Drawing created by WTAP. The work of Michał Rouba is a unique combination of the influences of the Young Poland Krakow Academy of Fine Arts with the ideology of the "Vilnius school", which appealed to the new classicism in the visual arts. Michał Rouba created his own artistic style, being on the borderline of Romanticism and magical realism, similar to the German direction of New objectivity . The best example of this style is a series of paintings depicting the poor, forgotten districts of Vilnius. These are exceptional works, one of the few in Polish art history that depict a cityscape in the spirit of the New objectivity. The artist was above all a landscape painter, besides he painted around Vilnius and Polesie. His landscapes and views of Vilnius are part of the European-wide artistic trends of the 1920s and 1930s.
