ENThe article concentrates upon the social implications of Bernardas Brazdžionis' poems in which the specific atmosphere of his epoch is absorbed and reflected. We can distinguish between explicit (patriotic aspirations, social and political realities, contact with the audience) and implicit manifestations of his social attitudes. The implicit or "vertical" sociality is the result of the metaphysical and prophetic inclination of this poet. Brazdžionis' poetry draws heavily upon the Bible as its chief intellectual and poetical source. The following quotation may serve as its social code: It is not good that the man should be alone (Gen.2, 18). Brazdžionis succeeded in blending social and metaphysical trends through the images of Wandering jew and likewise Wandering Man. The representation of such blend can be seen in such poems as „What the mason told Jesus that night”, „Heavy arm”, „The last word of the accused sentenced to death”, „I am here alive”. The social suggestiveness of Brazdžionis' poetry lies in its emphatic rhetoric diction rather than lyrical narrative or meditation. One of the favorite stylistic devices of this poet is imitation and modification of dialogue. Repetitive rhythmic sequences leading to hypnotic trance are also important. Such hypnotic practices are characteristic of ancient ritual music. The ups and downs of Brazdžionis' popularity are due to the effect of the geopolitical and social changes that have taken place in Eastern Europe and Lithuania recently.
