ENThis article covers peculiarities of the state-legal status of the Duchy of Podillia as a part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). Our analysis of the historiographic works related to the topic has shown that the majority of scientists were focusing their research on the GDL’s political system and not on the legal status of the specific lands / duchies. The history of the Duchy of Podillia in the end of the 14 century is connected to the rule of the Koriatovych family, in particular to the nephews Oleksandr, Yurii, Kostiantyn, Fedir of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Algirdas. Both chronicles and act sources have served as a basis of this research, which made it possible to deduce that the Koriatovych duke family was able to separate itself from the central government of the GDL and become sovereign. This has reflected in their legal, political, military, economical and cultural activity. The Koriatovych family was only connected with GDL by their belonging to the Gediminids dynasty. Their independence was not limited even after the oath to the Louis the Hungarian was made (if it was). This independence, in our opinion, was the main cause of the liquidation of the Koriatovych’s rule in the Podillia area. [From the publication]
