ENJózef Ignacy Kraszewski devoted a great deal of space in his literary works to historical Lithuania. The novel Kunigas, written at the end of his life, is also evidence of this fascination. It creatively updates the great themes of Romanticism, even though it chronologically belongs to the period of Positivism. "Kunigas. Powieść z podań litewskich" [Kunigas. Novels from Lithuanian legends] is proof of the vitality of Romantic ideals and their attractiveness, because to this day the novel still enjoys unremitting popularity among Lithuanian readers.
