ENA hundred years ago Lithuania's independence was built when laying focus on the importance of spiritual values and the preservation of cultural heritage as a historic document from ancient to modern times. Cultural policy of an independent Lithuanian state greatly influenced the development of folk art, which in the second half of the 20th century evolved independently from archaic patterns. The Inter War period conditioned a more respectful attitude toward folk art and the revival of folk art tradition; moreover, it heeded vanishing traditional crafts and a means of preserving and promoting them. The Inter War period strengthened our understanding of folk art significance and the need for the symbols of national pride (especially national costumes) in our everyday life. At that particular moment folk art protection was taken into account while folk art conservation and a craftsmen coordination programme were considered, which was largely observed in a later stage. Lithuania was introduced to the international arena with its ethnography and folk art works, which to a large extent contributed to spreading awareness of the country and the rise of folk art prestige within the country. Public education and promoting activities enhanced the need for folk art while home industry was encouraged by the craftsmen coordinating system consisting of training, work equipment and a craft work transfer system. The expansion of home industry, which evolved as the result of the craftsmen stimulating system, revealed creative powers of a new generation, became more influential in modern life and was considered a core stone of a new development stage.
