ENThe Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth faced a real threat of extinction in the mid-17th century. Though its territory was enormous and the state was involved in victorious military actions it was getting weaker internally. The Commonwealth experienced more internal and external problems than ever. After the brief golden age at the dawn of the century it started to slide. Polish historian Pawel Jasienica has insightfully noted that a new style of ruling accompanied the new dynasty. The gentry sacrificed to Vasas not only politician but also moral legacy that had roots in the Gediminian dynasty but were strongly disappointed.
