ENAnykščiai region as one of the most beautiful provinces of Lithuania appeared quite early on the pages of the press in the beginning of the 20th century. At the beginning this wa s due to the personalities that originated from this region. Photographs wer e published in the most popular newspapers of that time, postcards, books. In the 1940s, forming the reportage photography, more and more famous Lithuanian photographers visited Anykščiai. Their images represented the region in the national press. Not only famous personalities have attracted photographers, but also the landscape of Anykščiai, natural and cultural monuments. Anykščiai region has perfectly expressed the idea of "Beautiful Lithuania" . The small town had everything that could be sought by the creators of a young, modern but romantic state - history, culture, nature, personalities. Puntukas stone as the most famous monument of nature, mythology, history and culture of the region, has been actively photographed since the appearance of the first photographers. Some of them looked at the stone as a decoration for their pictures, for others it was the main object worthy of respect. Although the stone itself did not change, the surrounding environment changed and thanks to the photographers now we have a bunch of various portraits of Puntukas stone and his environment. In 1943 bas-reliefs of Lithuanian national heroes, pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas wer e carved on the stone and the only one way of representing Puntukas wa s established. This visual material, supplemented with historical, folklore and literary details should be published in a separate publication. Puntukas stone deserves a solid monograph.
