LTMano analizuojama problema - anuo pasauliu bei su gyvųjų ir Vilniaus krašto sudėtinga tikėjimų mirusiųjų santykių sfera. Tie tikė- ir simbolių, susijusių su mirtimi, jimai labai įvairuoja, gali net vieni kitiems prieštarauti, bet sudaro tam tikrą vienetą, būdingą tiriamai grupei. Nustačiusi tyrimo planą bei iškėlusi klausimus, bandau susisteminti tyrimo medžiagą, besiremdama antropologine ir etnografine literatūra. Pradedu, kaip Eišiškių apylinkių gyventojai įsivaizduoja kitą pasaulį, dausas ar pragarą, ko tikisi po mirties ir iš kur gauna informacijos apie gyvenimą po mirties. Aprašau mirimo ir laidotuvių laiką; ypatingą dėmesį atkreipiu į tuos aspektus, kurie susiję su dvasia ir jos saugiu perėjimu į kitą pasaulį. Tikėjimas mirusiųjų kontaktu su gyvaisiais bei dviejų pasaulių abipusišku poveikiu lemia, kad protėvių atžvilgiu reikia būti labai atsargiam. Priklausomai nuo to, kaip gyvieji rūpinasi vėlėmis, mirusieji gali būti draugiški ar priešiški, padėti arba kenkti žmonėms. Sis ir anas pasaulis glaudžiai tarpusavyje susijęs, gyvieji ir mirusieji vieni kitiems reikalingi. Pasak pašnekovų yra daug veiksmų, kurie gali padėti arba pakenkti mūsų artimiesiems aname pasaulyje. Mirusieji laikomi savo artimųjų atmintyje, pasirodo sapnuose ir tokiu būdu dar gyvuoja mūsų pasaulyje. Tikėjimai, susiję su dvasios kelione į dausas yra religinės pasaulėžiūros, būdingos tiriamai bendruomenei, dalimi. Toks požiūris į pasaulį įjungia antgamtinę tikrovę, kuri turi savo atspindį žmonių poelgiuose. Tuos elgesius ir tikėjimus stengiuosi aprašyti.

ENThe problem I analyze concerns the complicated matter of beliefs and symbols related to death, the beyond and the contact between the living and the dead in the Southern part of the Vilnius Region. Although this matter is sometimes full of contradictions and seems difficult to understand to a person coming from 'the outside', it makes perfect sense to the people with whom I talked. First of all, I have looked for answers to a few questions: What do the inhabitants of the Ejszyszki area imagine the beyond to be? What do they expect to be happening after death? Where do they get information about life after death from? Next, I am trying to describe the events that occur in the short period before death and during the funeral. I emphasize those aspects, that are connected to the soul and its dangerous passage to the next world. If one believes that there is a possibility of staying in contact with the dead and that the world of the living and that of the dead have an impact on one another, it is obviously important to this person to maintain good relations with the souls of his/her ancestors. The dead can be friendly and helpful or they can bother people - it depends on how the living take care of them. Our world and the beyond have a strong connection because the inhabitants of the two realities are essential to each other. According to my informants, there are many activities which can bring relief or turn out to be harmful to our relatives who are already beyond the threshold of death.People who passed away last in the memory of the living relatives and appear in their dreams - therefore they are present around us even though we cannot see them or feel their physical presence. The beliefs concerning the journey of a soul to the next, different world are a strict part of the religious worldview characteristic to the local community, which I studied. Such conceptions broaden the world by adding to it a certain supernatural dimension - the main interest of my work.
