ENThe legal basis for the operation of the ‘Lituania’ association was the statute adopted in 1918 and supplemented in 1924. According to the statute, the association consisted of Lithuanian students of the university of Fribourg. The association was Christian in its nature, and its most important goal was to fully prepare for future work in Lithuania, the homeland of its members. At the beginning of its activities, the ‘Lituania’ association was confronted with the realities of the First World War. It had to engage in activities that were not related to studies, that is, to organize the relief of prisoners of war. For this purpose, the association established a special committee to assist prisoners of war. The association tended prisoners of war until the end of 1916, when the committee was moved from Fribourg to Lausanne. In later years, the activities of the association were limited to the matters typical of this type of organisations. At the meetings of the association, its members presented their papers and discussed them. They talked about the accumulation and management of the library, preservation of the archive, celebration of holidays (in particular, the anniversary of the association), student relief, and similar issues. During the war, the number of students at the university decreased and the activities of the association subsided. When a group of students from Russia arrived in 1918, new members joined its ranks. Acquisition of a flag and the ceremony of its consecration in 1922 was an exceptional event in the life of the association. Termination of the activities of the association should be linked to the massive drop in the number of Lithuanian students at the University of Fribourg in the 1930s.
