Summary / Abstract:

ENCinema in Šiauliai region has a history of more than one hundred and ten years, which is worth remembering. Until 1909, a wandering cinema, also known as an illusion, used to arrive in Šiauliai and surrounding towns. In 1939, in Šiauliai district, there were the following cinemas: in Šiauliai, “Kapitol” (owners Šmerelis Gocas, P. Gordonas), “Liaudies namai” (Vasario 16-osios str.); in Joniškis, “Gintaras” (owners J. Butkus and J. Šimkūnas); in Žagarė, “Mėnulis” (owner J. Briedis); in Kelmė, “Šaulių būrys”; in Kuršėnai, “Kinas”; in Radviliškis, “Lituanika” (owner S. Krišinskas). Šeduva, Smilgiai, Naujamiestis, Rozalimas, Pakruojis, Lygumai, Kuršėnai, Joniškis and other places were served by two sound cinema devices, “Philips” and “Forum”. In the post-war years, people watched various feature, animated and documentary films created with the theme of adventure and war in the cinemas “Aušra”, “Šviesa”, “Pergalės Tiesa”, and later “Laikas”, “Saulė”, “Palydovas” and “Dainos”.
