Summary / Abstract:

ENThe most ancient cultic monuments of Vileyka district have been studied since the middle of the XIX century. Many well-known scientists, such as A. Kirkor, K. Tyshkevich, E. Romanov, A. Sapunov, A. Pokrovsky, visited this district. The cultic boulders, springs, streams, lakes, bogs and mountains can be observed on the territory of the region. The most significant group of cultic boulders - boulders with holes - was found in the valleys of the rivers Naroch, Viliya and Iliya near the sites of the Stone and Bronze Ages. The other groups of cultic stones were found in the area between the two rivers: Naroch and Viliya, near the site of the ancient settlement of the Iron Age. The major group of the cultic boulders here - the petrified bullocks and oxen. The motif of the church, tavern and wedding that collapsed under the ground is spread in Vileyka district. The topic of the "cursed river" can be observed near the sites of the ancient settlements of the Iron Age. Local population thinks that the water in the holy springs cures eyesight.
