Summary / Abstract:

ENThe change of Polish borders following World War II resulted in a great migration. The residents of the lost lands in the East were naturally settling mainly in the so-called regained territories: on the River Oder, in Western Pomerania and in Lubuskie. A portion of migrants stayed in central Poland. History made Poznań the second ‘little fatherland’ for a considerable group of former residents of Vilnius territories. The newcomers reinforced the circle of local intelligentsia, severely devastated during the war, in terms of science, literature and journalism. This process is illustrated with selected examples of scholars who supported Poznań University: a distinguished historian Henryk Łowmiański and two linguists - Czeslaw Kudzinowski and Jan Otrqbski. A superb poet, Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna, residing in Poznań since 1947, and Tadeusz Szeligowski, a pedagogue, composer and director, were also from Vilnius. The latter spent the last decade of his creative life in Poznań. Franciszek Hryniewicz, a nestor of Polish journalism after World War II, was connected to the „Głos Wielkopolski” daily for a quarter of a century, whereas Eugeniusz Paukszta, a writer, journalist and social activist, wrote over 30 books, thousands of press articles and played a significant part in the social movement in favor of integration of bestem Territories with the rest of Poland. The profiles of the scholars, the poet and the composer were only sketched, as these have their own biographers. More attention is devoted to Franciszek Hryniewicz and Eugeniusz Paukszta. Their achievements provide an interesting source for analysis in terms of political science.
