Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article deals with the conception of „open“ and „closed“ society of Bergson’s sociology in his final book „The Two Sources of Morality and Religion”, 1932. The famous French thinker applied his relational methodology and metaphysics to an analysis of religion and morality otherwise he made a huge impact to modern and postmodern social theory. The article deals with the context of French social sciences of the first half of the 20th century, when Dürkheim and his disciples institutionalized sociology - a new science with particular object of research and with special methods. Durkheimian conception of society and new theoretical and methodological principles applied in explaining the „social facts“ form a borderline between positive social philosophy of the 19th century and new sociology. It made a great impact to the development of social sciences. Bergson and Dürkheim were interested in the problems of morality and religion and from philosophy they turned to sociology and its field of interests. Morality, which is related to social and religious problematic, was one of the most important subjects in Bergson’s philosophy. This thinker did not explain the sources of morality and religion - he analysed the two types of morality (open and closed) and religion (static and dynamic) and developed an original conception of open and closed society. Bergsonian conception of open society became synonymous with modern democratic society. Durkheimian and Bergsonian sociology made a great influence to postmodern social theory and sociology, renewed a traditional materialistic way of thinking, therefore the analysis of these conceptions reveals fundamentals of contemporary Western sociology.
