ENThe article investigates the paradox of faith in Kierkegaard’s philosophy, especially in his work Fear and Trembling. The two existential figures that are prominent in this philosophical text, the knight of infinite resignation and the knight of faith, as well as existential situations related to these heroes, are analysed in the context of the history of Western philosophy and its most significant turning points. It is argued that the insights found in Fear and Trembling should be analysed not in the light of the facts of Kierkegaard’s biography, but in the light of these turning points of Western philosophy. It is shown that the two types of faith and the paradox of faith which is so prominent in Fear and Trembling can also be found in the course of Western philosophy as a whole. This important circumstance linking the existentional situation of a concrete individual to the history of Western philosophical throught can explain the significance and extraordinary influence of Kierkegaard’s philosophy.
