ENAmong Lithuanian contemporary graphic artists Romas Orantas stands out as an original painter of a singular world outlook and a non-traditional graphic style. His creative work is familiar to art lovers from wonderful illustrated books. Along with V. Petravičius, Ž. Mikšys, A. Steponavičius, B. Žilytė, P. Repšys, S. Eidrigevičius, A. Žvilius, A. Každailis and S. Chlebinskas, today he undoubtedly is one of the most important masters of the book art. On the other hand, his works often transcend the applied functions of the illustration art with the best specimens becoming a philosophical interpretation of human existence. The artist’s book graphics fall into two conceptually different trends: the first, conventional, of book illustration, and the second, personal, which seeks to exceed the limits of the illustration art and creates an expression of the world vision relatively independent of the text. It is with the latter trend that the painter’s all major achievements should be associated.
