ENThe first chapter examines increasing effects of globalization that have influenced the recent developments within the nation-state where the redefinition of ‘territoriality’ of the state is highly politicized, both from the inside as well as from the outside of the country perspective, just to mention the Polish Ccard issued to ethnic Poles in Lithuania. So some states, especially those in the Eastern and Ccentral Europe, take an active position of linking their nations by ensuring co-nationals living in the other countries with rights that are similar to those of their citizens. In this regard such kin-state strategies promote transnationalism across the border of two nation states. It is suggested that the notion of border areas refers to different trans-border policies and practices including kin-state strategy which fosters transnationalism but it also means an intimate relation between the state and the nation(s). Such relation(s) points to the imagined community as a  construct based on ideas about the descent. So people living on the other side of the state’s border are perceived as ethnically the same, and only the changes in geographical borders draw the line between the nation “here” and “there”.
