ENThe author of this study deals with regularities of formation of Western art criticism and its functions. In the eighteenth century the art criticism separated from the history of art and aesthetics. The function of art criticism is to evaluate, judge, appreciate, interprete and explain the work of art. It is necessary to remark that art history has the same functions. Principal difference between art history and art criticism is that the latter has social and cultural functions, too. Art criticism becomes a mediator between art and public and helps to regulate hierarchy of values when in the art world new work of art appears. The functions of aesthetics are to formulate definitions which could explain nature of art. Between philosophy of art, aesthetics and art criticism there exists mutual connection. Art criticism uses methodological innovations which are found by theoretical disciplines and art criticism which has a close connection with creation of art could inspire new theories. The beginning of Lithuanian visual arts criticism is linked with the first visual arts exhibition at 1907. Until the Second World War quite different principles of art analysis have been formed. Normal development of art criticism broke of political and cultural changes. In this way Lithuanian contemporary art criticism lacks methodological arsenal.
