Summary / Abstract:

ENThis paper sets out to explore the relationship between drama and ritual, as it is exemplified in the methodologies of research in Sanskrit drama. Based on a revisiting of early research in Indian drama, this analysis explores the possible assumptions for the separation of drama and ritual, as well as evaluating its methodological foundation. The exploration points out that this separation is based on Western religious concepts in their positivistic form prevailing in religious studies that deal with the categories of secular and sacred to define all phenomena of religious activities. Therefore, their application to Sanskrit drama enables modern scholars to draw a demarcation line between both ritualistic and secular forms of dramatic action that has no approval in the classical dramatic texts of India.
