ENMAGMA is a collaborative project of making connections and creating links between Lithuanian and Italian women artists. It comes with a new wave of global feminism - from the millions joining the Women’s March and protesting against abuse and silencing in the #MeToo campaign to the Times’ Up movement fighting sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace. In one year this powerful volcano has erupted with the unseen force - exhibitions in Vilnius and Rome could not hope for better times. We are not only celebrating creative women’s history, but also their future. The title M/A\G/M\A refers to the process of transformation and has strong scriptovisual and phonetic significance. As onomatopoeia, it resonates through the body, repeating the sounds of the environment; as a visual sign, it encompasses the syllables of the first word pronounced. MAGMA is MA-MA with a G point in the middle. "Magma" refers to the processes of merging body and words in photographs, paintings, collages, performances and video art of women artists inspired by emancipatory ideas and feminism. While there were many interesting and highly accomplished Lithuanian women artists during the Soviet period, their search for individual style remained within the discursive frame of "silent modernism" (a term, coined by a curator Elona Lubytė). The conceptual shift of paradigms from modern self-expression to postmodern self-(de)construction coincided with historical changes: The Singing Revolution, the fall of Iron Curtain and the reestablishment of Lithuanian independence on 11 March, 1990.
