Juozas Brazaitis' letters from America : a Eeuropean intellectual's drama in the new world

LTStraipsnio pradžioje autorius apsibrėžia nustatyti savo darbo šaltinį, pirminį jo publikavimą ir paties Juozo Brazaičio asmenybės ir veiklos pristatymą. Taip sužinoma, kad straipsnio pagrindas yra knyga apie Juozą Brazaitį, žymų kylančios Lietuvos kultūros veikėją, „Ugninis stulpas: 25 – eri metai be Juozo Brazaičio. Laiškai. Dokumentai. Liudijimai.“ Straipsnio tikslas aptarti šiuos ir kituose leidiniuose jo paties ar kitų spausdintus laiškus. Pirmą straipsnio dalį autorius skiria pokario metams aptarti ir politiniams faktoriams nustatyti. Joje aptariama Lietuvos padėtis tarp dviejų polių ir visų lūkesčius atgauti valstybės nepriklausomybę. Kita dalis skirta J. Brazaičio veiklai aptarti. Aptariama Vyriausiojo Lietuvos Išsivadavimo komiteto (VLIK) veikla ir svarba. J. Brazaitis tampa VLIK‘ o informavimo ir ryšių su užsieniu centrų galva. Tam, kad galėtų eiti šitas pareigas J. Brazaitis turėjo sudaryti ir pristatyti specialias programas, kurių iki tol nebuvo sudarę diplomatinės atstovybės. Tračia dalis aprėpia kitą J. Brazaičio gyvenimo etapą – pašalinimą iš VLIK. Laiškų pagalba bandoma apžvelgti visus nesutarimus VLIK‘ o viduje. Tolimesniam žingsniui – diplomatiniai pradžiai Amerikoje skirtas ketvirtas skyrius. Apžvelgiama, kiek įmanoma, platesnė J. Brazaičio veikla už Atlanto, jo straipsnių, knygų pagrindinės idėjos ir viltys. Paskutinėse straipsnio dalyse aptariamas asmeninis J. Brazaičio gyvenimas, sveikatos problemos, šeimos netektis. ENAt the start of the article the author sets himself the task of defining the source of his work, its first publication, and introducing Juozas Brazaitis and his activities. The article is based on a book about Juozas Brazaitis, a famous cultural figure of Lithuania, entitled “Fire Wall: 25 years without Juozas Brazaitis. Letters. Documents. Witnesses.” The article is aimed at discussing these letters and letters published in other publications. The first part of the article is dedicated to the postwar period and political aspects. It tells about Lithuania's situation and hopes to restore independence. The second part of the article describes J. Brazaitis' activities. It tells about the activities and importance of the Supreme Committee for the Liberation of Lithuania. J. Brazaitis was the head of information and foreign relations centres. In order to perform these duties, J. Brazaitis had to prepare and present special programmes that had not been prepared by diplomatic representative offices before. The third part of the article tells about J. Brazaitis' removal from the Supreme Committee for the Liberation of Lithuania. With the help of letters, it tries to analyse all disagreements within the committee. The fourth part of the article describes the start of his diplomatic career in America. It provides an overview of J. Brazaitis' activities on the other side of the Atlantic, the key ideas and expectations expressed in his articles and books. At the end of the article the author discusses J. Brazaitis' personal life, health problems, loss of relatives, and describes the legacy of the cultural and political figure.
