ENAny individual drawing made by a child can be read as a sign that tells us something about the child, something about the picture and when it is interpreted it tells us something about its interpreters too. The article analyses reasons, tendencies of a change in art education and problems of the implementation of ideas at a primary school. It discusses opposite eastern and western art conventions and explains how different conventions in art influence the process of teaching drawing at a primary school. The conclusion is drawn that children’s drawing skills depend on a philosophical aspect of art education. The problems that children face at school in the West when they learn to draw are specific to and typical of the West only. The theme was analysed seeking to find new possibilities for improving teaching visual arts in Lithuania. The problem of copying as a background for creation is analysed. The work sums up theories and conception in this area in accordance with the problems that arise at primary schools of Lithuania. The last part of the article describes and interprets main problems that arise during classes in art. The analyses revealed that peculiarities of children’s artistic development in Lithuania are similar to those in the West.
