ENAt the turn of the 20th century national ideologies began to appear in Central and Eastern Europe. The process of the development of Belarusian national consciousness had been very long. The first calls for autonomy appeared in the 1880s and the genuine Belarusian national movement originated in the early 20th century. In the context of publications and the growth of Belarusian national consciousness it was the works of Michał Römer and Ludwik Abramowicz, who expressed the views of the krajowcy, that played the most important role. The growth of Belarusian national consciousness was conditioned by the historical context and geographical location of the Lithuanian-Belarusian lands, infuenced by the history of the Polish state and the Russian Empire. At the beginning of the 20th century, before the outbreak of World War I, in their publications the krajowcy pointed out a low degree of Belarusian national consciousness and emphasized lack of goals and aspirations on the part of national activists. This subject matter was frequently discussed alongside the issue of Lithuanian national revival.
