Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article deals with the issues and strategies of translation of hedges performing various communicative-pragmatic functions. By applying hedges, the speaker may delimit, depersonalize or modalise in any other way his/her utterance. When classifying and systematizing issues of translation, most frequently, pragmatic, cultural and linguistic issues of translation are singled out in addition to translation issues stemming from specific aspects of the text. The article sorts translation issues considering their type when translating hedging devices into German and Lithuanian, i.e., from the cognitive point of view, perception and rendering issues are singled out while from the point of view of the explored phenomenon one may discuss semantic and pragmatic issues of hedge translation. On the basis of the results of a pilot study, where hedging devices were translated into German and Lithuanian, translation strategics were explored, grouped, and systematized, and examples were presented. Two major groups of translation strategies were singled out: strategies impacted by the original language and strategics influenced by the translation language. To the first group, substitution strategies (word-by-word and synonymic cases of translation) and elimination strategics were attributed. Strategies which arc impacted by the translation language arc sorted as complementation, neutralization, paraphrasing, antonymic translation, and perspective change strategies. The performed analysis showed that when translating hedging devices, most difficulties stem from issues of understanding, i.e. they are conditioned by the ‘foreign’ language. Issues of rendering develop whenever the translator fails to delimit oneself from the original text and to present a translation corresponding to lexical-semantic, morpho-syntactic and textual norms of the translation language.
