ENAt the beginning of the year, Jonas Nekrašius’ reference book Šiaulietiška spauda XVI–XXI amžiuje: leidybos, platinimo ir saugojimo įstaigos (Šiauliai Press in the 16th–21st Centuries: Publishing, Distribution and Storage Institutions) (2019) appeared on the shelves of bookshops. The author is a well-known Šiauliai regional ethnographer, lawyer, who has published more than 20 books, about 2000 scientific articles on various topics of cultural history. For the author, the category of Šiauliai press is broad and often covers the old Šiauliai district. In independent Lithuania, Šiauliai district was the largest district in Lithuania, even three times larger than Mažeikiai district. The large center of the district also became a press center. The newspaper publishers were trying to meet the expectations of the residents of Šiauliai district. Through the press, a Šiauliai identity was formed, a kind of alternative to the Samogitian and the Highland identity, and the urban identity became the identity of the sub-region. Although due to historical circumstances Jonas Nekrasius’ gaze has naturally grown beyond Šiauliai, the reference book focuses mainly on the city.
