Summary / Abstract:

EN"Dignity" is a historical and social category closely connected with human nature, Weltanschauung and self-consciousness. This category was already known to the ancient Greeks. Ancient Greek and Roman philosophers theoretically formulated the concept of man as a possessor of free will. The Middle Ages saw dignity as a property of nobility. Chivalry is its most prominent representation. The New Ages devaluated the social and moral ideals of the Middle Ages, especially those of chivalry and derided the modes of their expression. The Renaissance and especially the Enlightment transfered dignity to representatives of the third estate. This new concept of dignity had special importance in the theories of English constitutionalists T. Hobbse and J. Locke. In the development of this concept of dignity Kant makes a very important anthropocentric turn. Now "dignity" becomes exclusively personal possession which does not depend on external things. The concept of "dignity" as it is developed by I lobbes, Locke and Kant is a constitutive element of the modem democratic mentality.
