Ornamentinė baltų proza

LTXX a. pradžios baltų literatūrose bene pirmąkart sąmoningai imtasi formos bandymų, suprasta, kad forma turi ypatingą prasmę. To meto rašytojai siekė pasipriešinti nusistovėjusiems estetiniams kanonams: taip atsirado hibridinių prozos ir poezijos formų, kurias ypač pamėgo jaunieji literatai. Šie ne visuomet brandūs bandymai atspindėjo bendrąsias Europos tendencijas, turėjo įtakos telesnei baltų literatūrų raidai. Ne viename kūrinyje atsisakyta realistiniam pasakojimui būdingos tiesioginės minties raiškos ir pereita prie sąlygiškos ornamentinės kalbos. Rašytojai siekė kurti estetizuotus tikrovės paveikslus pasitelkdami tokais menines priemones, kurios galėtų transformuoti aprašomo pasaulio vaizdinį, – puošnius epitetus, palyginimus, metonimijas, metaforas. Tai būta savotiškų stilizacijų – kaip ir jugendo stiliaus dailės kūrinyje, kur tikrovės pavidalai buvo pakeisti labiau apibendrintu, visuminiu vaizdu. Baltų prozą labiausiai skatino tautosakos atmintis: iš liaudies kūrybos „pasiskolinamas“ švelnus dainiškas koloritas, pasitelkiama tautosakai artima estetizacija, pagal liaudiškąjį kanoną kuriamos metaforos. Vis dėlto latvių prozoje poetinės kalbos priemonėmis naudojamasi drąsiau, nesibaidoma egzotiškų, tautosakai svetimų įvaizdžių ir labiau priartėjama prie vokiškosios jugendo prozos „sekmadieninės kalbos“. ENAt the beginning of the 20th century, for the first time in Baltic literature there were conscious attempts to find new literary forms, it being understood that form also has its own meaning. The writers of that era attempted to oppose the established aesthetic canons. This gave rise to hybrid forms of prose and poetry, much loved by the young literati. These sometimes slightly amateurish attempts reflected general European tendencies of the time and they influenced the further development of Baltic literature. In more than one literary work, the direct expression of thought that is characteristic of realistic narrative was rejected in favour of ‘ornamental’ language. These writers sought to create aestheticised pictures of reality by harnessing any artistic means available that could transform the image of the world described: colourful epithets, similes, metonymies, metaphors. This was a particular form of stylisation, similar to Art Nouveau / Jugendstil in the plastic arts, in which the shapes and forms of reality were transformed into a more generalised, aggregate image. Baltic prose was most inspired by folk traditions: a gentle musical overtone was ‘borrowed’ from folk art; the aesthetics of oral tradition were called upon; and metaphors were created in tune with the canons of popular culture. In Latvian prose the devices of poetic language were used somewhat more boldly, not shying away from exotic images outside the realm of folklore. This was closer to the “Sunday best” language of German Jugendstil prose.
