ENAmong all perished servicemen, the Lithuanian history happened to single out the ones who perished first: Povilas Lukys, first volunteer of the Lithuanian Wars of Independence, Antanas JuozapaviËius, first officer, etc. This glorious pantheon also lists 1st Lt. Normundas Valteris who died during the international peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, former Republic of Yugoslavia. He is the first serviceman of the Lithuanian Armed Forces who died during a peacekeeping mission. The idea for this paper originated in the annual scientific conference that was dedicated to Prof. Joel Weinberg and took place at the Faculty of Humanities of Daugavpils University in 2012. The collection of information caused many difficulties as Normundas Valterisí relatives no longer reside in Lithuania and it is complicated to reach them. Also, his family changed the place of residence thrice; therefore, there are no people who have known the family since his childhood. Consequently, some reasonable doubts appeared about the review of the entire life of Normundas Valteris due to the lack of resources. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sandra Grigaravičiūtė gave me a great inspiration to carry out the research. She dispelled the doubts and encouraged me to conduct the research that aims at promoting the research on the history of the restored Lithuanian Armed Forces.
