ENThis book is dedicated to the memory of works, ideas and personality of Juozas Skaistutis Šveistys, eminent zootechnician, scientist, teacher, professor, doctor habilitatus, the head of the Department of Pig Production, the member of the Science Council of Lithuania. The book contains articles, written by the professor on research policy, survey of his published and unpublished works, articles - reminiscences of his pupils, colleagues, representatives of animal breeding institutions, friends and relatives on scientific, pedagogical, social and other activities, his favourite quotations, letters and a list of bibliography. J. S. Šveistys was bom on October 6, 1929 in Kelmė, in the family of a lawyer. In 1954 he graduated from Lithuanian Veterinary Academy and at the end of the same year started his scientific career at the Institute of Animal Science, where he was a post graduate student, later a researcher and head of department. In 1968-1971, J. S. Šveistys headed the department of Animal Production Economy and Management, and in 1971-1976 the sector of Pig Production Management. In 1976-1999, J. S. Šveistys headed the department of Pig Production. He worked in the field of pig breeding, housing and management and also horse breeding. He was awarded the State prize (1969) for the formation of Lithuanian White pig breed. In 1993 J. S. Šveistys took the initiative in organizing the conservation of the critical old Lithuanian farm animal breeds, thus preventing these breeds from their complete disappearing. He played a very important role in the formation of the Lithuanian strategy for conservation of farm animal breeds. J. S. Šveistys death was a great loss to Lithuanian animal science, and for those, who have been in daily contact with him, he was a rather fatherly figure, a person to be consulted either scientifically or personally and always generously giving his advice and support.
